Lobo starring Angel Locsin and Piolo Pascual
Lobo (english, wolf) was a fantasy series about young lovers Lyka Raymundo and Noah Ortega, produced by and aired on ABS-CBN. The story revolved around the two main characters who belong to opposing groups, the Luna which seeks to eliminate the Lobo or white werewolves, and the Waya, which seeks to protect the Lobo. Noah becomes a second lieutenant of the Philippine Army. During a crucial mission, he saves Don Manolo Sebastian and becomes involved in the battle between the Luna and the Waya. Starring Angel Locsin, who at that time had just transferred from GMA Network, Lobo also starred Piolo Pascual alongside Locsin.

Lyka's position as fashion assistant to Lady Elle is foreshadowed by the fact that she is believed to be the last hope of her fellow white wolves: "Ang Huling Bantay". It is through the House of Elle that Lyka crosses paths with Noah, Lady Elle's bodyguard and driver. Little does she know that he is actually her childhood friend, "Jay-Jay" whom she thought was long dead. When Lyka and Noah finally meets and falls in love, something had to tear them apart. Something that Noah can never accept. The blossoming romance between the two is hindered by the presence of Gabrielle Dizon and Anton Rivero. Gabrielle is a deep-penetration agent who attempts to distract Noah while Anton is in love with Lyka and will do anything to prove his love.

The show garnered mixed reviews, but it remained one of the top rating fantaseryes in the country and garnered critical acclaim both in the country and abroad. It gained a rating of 36.3% on the airing when its pilot episode aired on 28 January 2008.

Encantadia [Book1]

Share |

Encantadia is one of the most expensive series ever produced in Philippine television. In an attempt to create the feel of a land of beautiful creatures with extraordinary powers, GMA Network had to create a studio that would suit the theme of Encantadia perfectly. Encantadia was a fantaserye about four princesses, sisters whose characters represent the four elements of air, fire, water, and earth. Each sister has her own power according to her element. Encantadia told a story of family, friends, and the everlasting quest to find true love.

Encantadia Cast 01

With an original story, Encantadia garnered a huge following. In addition to that, the costumes and the set were amazingly structured to compliment the beauty of the story . In its pilot episode aired on 2 May 2005, Encantadia earned a 47% rating. Shown in 2005, the series gained popular and critical recognition in the country and abroad. So successful was the show that phrases and lines used during the program became part of everyday conversations for the audience, such as “pashnea” which means “animal.”

Mulawin starring Richard Gutierrez and Angel Locsin

Share |

Filipinos are used to stories of creatures that are half-human and half-animal, such as mermaids and the Tikbalang. The creation of the fantaserye Mulawin was considered to be a first in the country. Mulawin told the story of half-human, half-eagle people that must fight the Ravena, a half-human, half-raven people to protect the mortals from the latter, and of Aguiluz and Alwina who fall in love with each other.

The series was shown in 2004 and gained lukewarm response from the audience within its first week of showing. But after a few weeks, the story unfolded, the program gained bigger following and eventually became one of the top-rating fantaseryes offered by GMA Network. With Richard Gutierrez and Angel Locsin, who are both pleasing to look at, playing its lead characters, Mulawin became easy to watch and easy to love. Due to people's response to the show, the network opted for it to be made into a feature film and in December 2005, Mulawin the Movie became as an entry to the Metro Manila Film Festival.

The Return of Darna in Philippine Primetime TV starring Marian Rivera

Share |

Before making its way into television, Darna was popular in the world of comics. This epic story created by Mars Ravelo was made and remade into films until it was turned into a television series on GMA Network. It starred Angel Locsin as the iconic superhero and premiered in Filipino homes on 11 April 2005.

Darna tells the story of a simple girl who has the ability to become an extraordinary heroine in times of need. The series became a phenomenal hit among Filipinos reaching 47.1% rating in its pilot episode. With her inimitable charm, Locsin portrayed the role of Darna well and made the audience love her and the character. What sets Darna apart from other fantaseryes for one, is its character. Darna herself may be compared to superheroes from foreign countries but still maintain Filipino traits. Apart from the story and the characters that make up the series, the costumes and location were also a big factor in the success of the show, with meticulously designed costumes to fit each character.

Darna - Marian Rivera 01
Four years later, Darna was remade by the same network, but this time with a different cast, starring Marian Rivera as the lead character Darna. Even with a different artist in the title role, Darna continues to be a top rating fantaserye.

Years after the original Darna had battled the forces of evil, Narda learns that she is the anointed one chosen to save the world from evil forces. Nursing a broken heart, Narda declines because she believes that a simple and crippled woman like her cannot take such a huge responsibility. Her refusal simultaneously triggers the influx of evil forces in the town area, where Darna's rogues are found encased in ice. Narda finally concedes to her fate and accepts her destiny as the new Darna.
